Ambicoloration and morphological aberration in the sole Achirus declivis (Pleuronectiformes: Achiridae) and two other cases of color abnormalities in achirid soles from southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Macieira,Raphael Mariano; Joyeux,Jean-Christophe; Chagas,Leandro Pereira.
Three cases of color abnormalities and one of morphological aberration in flatfishes of the genus Achirus are described from the Piraquê-Açú River estuary, Espírito Santo, Brazil. One specimen of A. declivis has 75% of the blind side with coloration like that of the ocular side. Another specimen of the same species is strongly hypomelanistic. A third specimen has incomplete eye rotation and a hooked dorsal fin. An ambicolored A. lineatus is also described.

Birth defects in Brazil: Outcomes of a population-based study Genet. Mol. Biol.
Oliveira-Brancati,Camila Ive Ferreira; Ferrarese,Valéria Cristina Carvalho; Costa,Antonio Richieri; Fett-Conte,Agnes Cristina.
Abstract Birth defects (BDs) are functional and structural alterations in embryonic or fetal development. With an incidence of approximately 3-5%, BDs are a leading cause of infant mortality and lifelong disability. A population-based prospective case-control study was conducted for one year with 5204 infants, between March 1st, 2011 and February 29th, 2012 in the city of São José do Rio Preto, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The incidence of BDs was 3.2% [95% confidence interval (95%CI): 2.8-3.8%]. The most common congenital anomalies were heart diseases in isolation (11.2%; 95%CI: 7.3-16.9%) followed by Down syndrome (9.5%; 95%CI: 5.9-14.8%), neural tube defects (8.9%; 95%CI: 5.4-14.1), urinary tract anomalies (7.7%; 95%CI: 4.4-12.7%), and polydactyly (7.0%;...

Congenital hepatic fibrosis associated with ascites in a nellore calf Ciência Rural
Gois,Daniela Dantas de; Sousa,Isabelle Vieira de; Barbosa,Francisca Maria Sousa; Silva Neto,José Ferreira da; Sampaio,Rubia Avlade Guedes; Simões,Sara Vilar Dantas; Dantas,Igor Mariz; Lucena,Ricardo Barbosa.
ABSTRACT: Congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF) is an autosomal recessive malformation characterized by a variable degree of fibrosis and bile duct proliferation, mainly described in people and rarely reported in bovine European breeds. In addition to liver fibrosis, this syndrome has been associated with ascites and subcutaneous edema in calves. This paper described the pathological findings of the first report of CHF in a Nelore bovine fetus. A stillborn calf was removed by cesarean section because of dystocia. At necropsy, characteristic changes of CHF were observed, such as a large increase in abdominal volume associated with hepatic fibrosis and marked subcutaneous edema. Histological examination of liver revealed periportal and port-portal islands of...

Effect of essential oil from Citrus aurantium in maternal reproductive outcome and fetal anomaly frequency in rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
Volpato,Gustavo T.; Francia-Farje,Luis A.D.; Damasceno,Débora C.; Oliveira,Renata V.; Hiruma-Lima,Clélia A.; Kempinas,Wilma G..
Citrus aurantium L., commonly known as bitter orange, is widely used in folk medicine, but there is little data in the literature about the effects on pregnancy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of essential oil obtained from fruits of Citrus aurantium on the maternal reproductive outcome and fetal anomaly incidence in rats. Pregnant Wistar rats were randomized into four groups (n minimum = 12 animals/group): G1 = control, G2 to G4 = treated with essential oil from C. aurantium at dose 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg, respectively. Rats were orally treated, by gavage, with plant essential oil or vehicle during pre-implantation and organogenic period (gestational day 0-14). On gestational day 20 the rats were anaesthetized and the gravid...

One Case of Triphallia in the Marine Snail Echinolittorina peruviana (Caenogastropoda: Littorinidae) International Journal of Morphology
Castillo,Viviana M; Brown,Donald I.
Gonochoric representatives of Littorinidae have a reproductive system organized with transit organs that connects the testicle with a penis specialized for internal fertilization. However, malformations at this level can produce, like triphallia (presence of triple penis). This description corresponds to one case of triphallia found in Echinolittorina peruviana (Lamarck, 1822) inhabitant of the South Pacific coasts. The macro and microscopic analysis reveals that every penis is an independent appendix whose individual morphology is similar to that in normal individuals, characterized by a non pigmented conic penis associated with a mammilliform gland located at the base of the right ocular tentacle. The cervical sperm groove lined by a simple ciliated and...

Relationships between fetal body weight of Wistar rats at term and the extent of skeletal ossification BJMBR
Chahoud,I.; Paumgartten,F.J.R..
We investigated the relationship between fetal body weight at term (pregnancy day 21) and the extent of ossification of sternum, metacarpus, metatarsus, phalanges (proximal, medial and distal) of fore- and hindlimbs and cervical and coccygeal vertebrae in Wistar rats. The relationships between fetal body weight and sex, intrauterine position, uterine horn, horn size, and litter size were determined using historical control data (7594 fetuses; 769 litters) of untreated rats. Relationships between body weight and degree of ossification were examined in a subset of 1484 historical control fetuses (154 litters) which were subsequently cleared and stained with alizarin red S. Fetal weight was independent of horn size, uterine horn side (left or right) or...

The Impact of Proximol (Cymbopogon proximus) Intakeon Pregnant Albino Ratsand their Fetuses During Gestation Period International Journal of Morphology
Abdelrahman,Heba A; Omar,Amel R; Salah EL-Din,Eman Y.
Halphabarol, the active principle of Proximol, is the most potent of the four antispasmodics present in the national desert weed Cymbopogon proximus or ''Halfa Bar''. Halphabarol is of great value for the management of renal colic and in the expulsion of ureteric calculi as it causes dilation of the ureter below the site of calculus while active propulsion is maintained. Evaluation the congenital malformation of proximol in pregnant albino rats during gestation period. The virgin female rats were mated with male rats and the pregnant rats were orally administered a human equivalent dose (0.05 mg/kg) of Proximol from 5th-20th gestation day. At day 20 of pregnancy, all rats were anesthetized to obtained maternal and fetal data. The treatment group displayed...
